Pied Piper, 2014
The story 'Pied Piper' originates in a legend from the town of Hamelin in Germany. The title was also known as the Pan Piper or the Rat-Catcher of Hamelin as it refers to a story about a piper who caught a rat with it. The story has divers versions which suggest different ending yet every version contains a plot of the mayor, represents those blind by greed, breaking promise with piper by refusing to pay a full sum. As a result of deceiving piper, children in town pay a cost, Piper plays a song and the children followed it out of town.
The recent incident happened in Korea, sink of ferry Sewol, resembles in a many ways with this story. The alike version I first heard of pied piper story, Korea failed to rescue people in Sewol. Most of them were students who were on their way to school journey, traumatic impression caught up many of teenagers in Korea, brought deep social depression.
Wood structures in the installation are based on the mechanism of 'tandom lifting' method, which is used to drag and elevate large and heavy industrial structure, was actually used to raise Sewol from the bottom of the ocean. Pencils connected to servo motors are consistently erasing text written on a panel which is the story of pied piper edited to imply implication of the incident. Especially the coordinate of which Sewol sank was continuously censored, at the same time another pencil in opposite direction was leaving a trace as drawing, transforming erased information into a sort of line drawing.
